Neapolitan at a Tokyo coffee shop

I went to Kichijoji in search of a retro coffee shop…and there I found a super retro coffee shop that only those in the know know about. Apparently it used to be in Waseda…

The interior, from the floor to the tables and counter, is a solid brown color. Even though the restaurant is crowded, it feels very calming.

I initially had my sights set on curry rice, but as I was looking at the menu, I was drawn in by the words “lunch only” and quickly ordered the Neapolitan set.

The piled-high presentation and the colors…beautiful! The sausage was also nicely browned. It looked delicious!

Let’s eat!

First, I wrapped a huge portion around my fork and took a big bite! It wasn’t a tomato flavor, but a demi-glace flavor. The mild flavor and rich texture were pleasant and delicious.

Next, I sprinkled a little powdered cheese on top…the harmony of the saltiness and mild sauce doubled the flavor. The rich yet gentle flavor was a deep signature of demi-glace.

The large slices of paprika and bell pepper were very soft, complementing the firm texture of the browned sausage. The rich sauce brought out the flavor of each ingredient. This is a lunch-only, limited-quantity offer, so while supplies last, it’s gone. Personally, I’d love to eat two or three plates!

The mini salad included with the set was cabbage and lettuce. The Thousand Island dressing was just the right amount, not interfering with the flavor of the Neapolitan. The chef here is a true professional.

I finished the meal, leaving me wanting more. I also ordered a baked apple.

The apples baked with the skin on have a refreshing tartness that spreads throughout your mouth. The subtle sweetness of the whipped cream keeps it from being too sour. It’s super soft, but the toasted texture of the skin is intriguing. There are raisins underneath the cream!? I was surprised. But it’s delicious. It stands out from sugar-heavy desserts. The ultimate in gentle sweet and sour. This is a seasonal special, so it’s only available at this time of year.

Paired with the coffee in the Neapolitan set, it makes a great after-meal dessert. I don’t usually pay much attention to sweets, but this one caught my eye, so I’m glad I ordered it!

This retro coffee shop offers top-notch flavor and atmosphere. A very satisfying lunch!
