[Kanda Curry] Experience the shock of authentic South Indian cuisine at the hidden gem “Indian Fujiko.” What’s the story behind taking over the former restaurant?
Kanda Sarugakucho. In this area, known as a fierce curry battleground, lies a famous restaurant known only to those in the know.
That restaurant is “Indian Fujiko,” a curry specialty restaurant. (Although I visited a few years ago…lol)
Located on the second floor of a building, it’s not immediately obvious at first glance. A staircase leading directly from the sidewalk to the second floor is the entrance to this hidden gem. It was a few years ago, but the powerful experience remains vivid in my memory.
A retro space that retains the spirit of the former diner
The owner of this restaurant first opened a restaurant in Koganei, then moved to Koenji. At the time, the restaurant was called “Indian Fuji.” It then moved to its current location in Kanda Sarugakucho, changing its name to “Indian Fujiko.”
In fact, this Kanda restaurant has a fascinating story behind it. Originally, it was a diner run by a senior couple. When the owner heard that the restaurant was closing, he was so determined to preserve the place he loved that he decided to keep the interior and exterior intact.
Although the business has changed from a diner to an authentic curry restaurant, the interior still retains the nostalgic, warm atmosphere of a Japanese diner.
The Deep Meaning Behind the Restaurant Name “Fujiko”
The unique name “Indian Fujiko” is said to be more than just a play on words. According to an interview article, it has a deeper meaning.
The name comes from the Buddhist phrase “shindofuji,” which means “the human body and the land on which it lives are one and inseparable.” This idea conveys the restaurant’s sincere approach to food.
Unrelenting Authenticity! A Lunch with Delicious Tastes You’ll Love
The curry offered is a staunchly authentic dish, learned directly by the owner in South India.
For lunch, we highly recommend the “Two-Curry Platter” or “Three-Curry Platter,” which allows you to choose your favorite curry from several curries of varying spiciness.
I’m not a fan of spicy food, but I do love curry. Of the four curry options available that day, I chose the two-curry platter: the mildest “dal curry” and the second spiciest “chicken curry.”

Enjoy it however you like. You can pour it directly over rice or dip it like tsukemen. Take one bite and… it’s spicy! It’s certainly spicy, but it’s okay. Savoring it slowly with the chai included in the set, you’ll discover a deeper world that goes beyond just being spicy.
“A taste I’ve never tried before” and “A maniac’s deliciousness” are words that spring to mind.
According to the owner, “We don’t adjust the flavor to suit Japanese tastes.” It’s this unpretentious attitude that creates this one-of-a-kind flavor. I was shocked, thinking, “So this is authentic South Indian curry!”
Summary: A “terrifying” restaurant that’s addictive once you try it.
Indian Fujiko serves authentic curry lunches during the day and international cuisine (including curry, of course) at night.
Once you try it, you’ll never forget the addictive flavor. It’s so addictive you’ll want to say, “It’s terrifying!” If you’re looking to experience authentic spices in Kanda, be sure to take those stairs.
